1.4 Blog Discussion: What Does Ethics in the Aviation Profession Mean to You?
In my opinion, it is impossible to define ethics in completely cognitive terms. Value judgments apparently are mixed in with skill-based judgments to result in complex behavioral decisions. It may be helpful, in attempting to analyze ethics, to draw a contrast between ethics and professional conduct. Professional conduct can be thought of as referring to cognitive matters that require skill and knowledge as the basis of decision making. Ethics, on the other hand, refers to values that are intrinsic in the person making the decision and that may or may not affect the outcome of the decision. These values include but are not limited to trust, a sense of right and wrong, concern for the welfare of others, responsibility for one's actions, and adherence to one's beliefs in the face of pressure to do otherwise.
Ethics in aviation industry involves considering customer safety as priority. The aviation industry needs to have a well-trained staff who can act responsibly for their customers, share genuine information to them and take measures for a comfortable and safe journey. The aviation industry like other businesses need to practice integrity and have fair dealing with customers. They should compensate the travelers who suffer due to flight delays and cancellations. The booking process and flight costs should be transparently shared with customers. Customer luggage and any support required in terms of healthcare or first aid should be provided as customers spend considerable time in flight at some routes and they belong to all age groups.
The aviation staff should not discriminate with their customers based on their own defined criteria. The ethics also involve processing of requests and refunds as per the policies and regulations. No undue advantage should be charged from the customers owing to their needs and necessities. The aviation industry should responsibly maintain their flights to avoid any mid air or ground emergencies. They should use quality flights and avoid any risk to the life of passengers and their staff. They need to treat their staff with proper compensation, facilities and good working conditions so that they are satisfied and get support for their work.
